Artificial intelligence (AI) has become a normal part of daily life — from drafting emails, generating art — but the deeper we dig into that space, the vulnerabilities of these tools becomes more apparent (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini). As exciting as it is to see what AI can do, it is also unsettling to see how easily it can be misused. Hackers are now using AI to automate attacks, even embedding malicious code into open-source models shared on the web. It means that people with very little technical skill can tap into powerful tools for cybercrime, and a lot of users downloading these models may not even realize what is hiding under the hood.
Another major vulnerability is something called prompt injections, where attackers trick chatbots into ignoring their own safety rules. Even with filters in place, these models can still be manipulated just by carefully phrasing the input. On top of that, there is the issue of data privacy. Sensitive information users share with AI tools can sometimes reappear in unrelated queries, which is a concern for businesses or anyone dealing with confidential data.
Then there is the rise of deep-fakes and AI-generated misinformation. These tools can now create video and audio content that looks and sounds completely real, opening the door to fraud, political manipulation, and reputational damage. Scammers have also stepped up their game with AI-powered phishing emails that are eerily convincing, pulling from public data to create personalized messages that are much harder to flag as fake. There have even been illegal activities that include mimicking a family member’s voice on a phone call to get targets to send money or sensitive information.
Surprisingly, it seems very easy to trick some chatbots into generating harmful code. Examples on social media have shown that just by pretending to role-play a fictional scenario, users can get AI to produce malware — including code that could steal passwords or access private systems. Even with safety layers in place, it turns out these models are still susceptible to creative prompts that push them beyond their intended use.
All of this has made me realize that AI, for all its brilliance, is not bulletproof. And as we inch closer to AI becoming more independent and thinking/acting like an individual — companies need to prioritize developing and implementing their own security frameworks and policies. The potential for good is huge, but so is the risk. It is not just about technology anymore; it is about how responsible we use it, and whether we are willing to admit that the smartest systems in the world still need supervision.
